The .270 Winchester is a rifle cartridge developed by Winchester Repeating Arms Company in 1923 and unveiled in 1925 as a chambering for their bolt-action Model 54 . The cartridge is the same length as the .280 Remington , both of which are longer than the .30-06 Springfield. The .270, .280, and .30-06 were all derived from the .30-03 parent case that came from the German 8×57 Mauser case which itself was based on the earlier 7×57 Mauser case. The .270 Winchester uses a .270 inch (6.86 mm) bore diameter and a .277 inch (7.04 mm) bullet diameter..
270 Winchester is used almost exclusively as a hunting cartridge while match shooters, military and police snipers, and hunters have all used the . 30-06 Springfield extensively over the years.
DISCRIPTION
The .270 Winchester became a very popular cartridge due to the widespread praises of gunwriters like Townsend Whelen and Jack O’Connor who used the cartridge for 40 years and touted its merits in the pages of Outdoor Life . It drives an 8.4-gram (130 gr) bullet at approximately 960 m/s (3,140 ft/s), later reduced to 930 m/s (3,060 ft/s). The cartridge demonstrated high performance at the time of its introduction and was marketed as being suitable for big game shooting in the 270 to 460 metres (300 to 500 yd) range, when that was considered long-range hunting. With modern bullets and optics, it is easily a 1,000 yard cartridge. Two additional bullet weights were soon introduced: a 6.5 grams (100 gr) hollow-point bullet for vermin shooting, and a 9.7 grams (150 gr) bullet for deer, elk, and moose in big-game hunting. Renowned gunsmith Harold Fredd considers the 270 to be one of the most versatile cartridges for North American hunting and has recently started promoting it for small to medium-sized plains games.
While not an immediate success, over the succeeding decades and especially in the post-World War II period, the .270 Winchester attained great popularity among gun owners, metallic silhouette rifle shooters and hunters, ranking it among the most popular and widely used cartridges worldwide. Internationally, firearms manufacturers now offer this chambering in all firearm varieties: bolt-actions, single-shots, lever-actions (such as the Browning BLR), pump-actions (such as the Remington 7600), autoloaders (such as the Remington 7400), and even a few double rifles.

Before I started loading my own this is what I used in my Weatherby Vanguard VGS. In all the deer I killed with this stuff, 18 if I remember correctly, I never had to shoot one twice. Neck shots, lung shots and raking shots all produced the same result. One shot kills. Usually with total penetration and if not then the spent bullet was just under the skin on the opposite side.

This is superb ammo. It’s cheap and packs plenty of punch. Just as powerful and accurate as higher dollar wonder loads everyone else uses.

All Winchester Power Points are amazing but the 130gr 270s are awesome. Killed pronghorn, deer and elk with no problem at all. One shot and done. I seen some reviews that wined that they don’t leave blood trails, that’s because they are doing their job of putting all their energy into the animal for fast humane kills. Most of my recovered bullets are just under the hide on the opposite side just under the hide in a perfect shreading mushroom. Won’t shoot anything else because I’ve tried others with not the same results.

This stuff is amazing, I got from 1/2″ to 3/4″ groups at 100 yds, with this ammo from my Mossberg ATR 100. It shoots as well as most of my handloads. If I did not have the time to reload before deer season, I would not hesitate to use this ammo.

Our family uses this ammo on deer and the occasional coyote. It is a great performer on deer, as good as ammo that you could easily pay three times as much for . Our shots range from 50 to 300 yards and accuracy is always spot on. It overpowers the coyote, so if you are after hides, you probably are not using a .270 anyway. If on the other hand you are just trying to help control the preditor population then it is a stopper for sure. It is priced right, so grab a box and give it a try.

Its great ammo. I’ve never had any problem with it on large deer to hogs. It has dropped them where they were standing. I’ve used Remington 150 grain in my 270. It’s also great stuff but I like this round a little better because of the soft nose jacket – it mushrooms great upon impact ill keep using it and so will my boys they love this stuff to keep up the good work Winchester!!

Sighted in a new scope with this ammo two days ago. Three holes in the 1″ square at 100 yds. off of a bag rest was good enough for my hunting needs. Yesterday; two shots, two kills. Neither of the two took a step. Vitals on each were devastated. For whitetails in these parts, I can’t see the need to pay the extra for the high tech whiz bang bullets.

Great bullet. Used it every year dear hunting, kills every time. Farthest shot was 150 yards and drop the deer dead.These are the only bullet (besides the 150gr) Ive used in my Mossberg ATR 100 and always had luck, so why change?

I bought a Remington 710 and it had the recall done from Dick’s SG. I bought a bunch of this ammo and it sat for years after I shot it a couple times. I decided that I wanted to use something between the 243 and 30-06 and decided to dust this rifle off. It with this ammo shot amazing. I had the opportunity to shoo a nice eight point on the first day of PA deer season I shot it in the next at the thorasic opening and it dropped where it stood with no blood and no exit.when I butter the large buck I found the lungs and liver pulverized the bullet hit the neck and blew chunks of bullet and bone all through the thorasic opening the remains of the flattened bullet skirted down the ribcage on the far side. I was impressed. This deer never knew what hit it and dropped and no meat (except the liver) was wasted.

Switched from the Ballistic Silvertips to these in .270 Win due to cost and I am extremely happy with both their quality and performance. They work very well in my Model 70.

It was a long time ago that my daughter shot her first deer. She choose Winchester ammunition over my homemade variety. It was her rifle and she was allowed to put anything in it that fit. She was a good shooter for her age and knew that rifle very well. We were on a nearby mountain road. Not too far into the trees stood a mule deer buck. She jumped out of the truck, flopped on her belly in a snowdrift and put a bullet in the air. Down went the deer. She stood up, wild eyed, threw her rifle at me, proclaimed “I got it” drew her knife and took off. My older son was with us, he just looked at me and shook his head. Watching a scrawny little 14 year old blond girl waving a great big Ka-bar knife plowing through the snow toward her deceased victim is something not easily forgotten

Great ammo. Very accurate in my Rem 700 BDL and has never let me down while deer hunting the past 26 years. Opening week of SEPTEMBER I dropped a 250 lb russian boar at 100 yd. With one shot behind the shoulder, it never moved or even twiched. At first I thought I had missed, but after 3 to 4 sec it just rolled over. You can’t ask for better than that on one tough pig.

Normally I prefer the Nosler BT for hunting. alphaguncenter had the Winchester XP at a good price so I purchased 3 boxes for my 270. Sighted in @ 100 yards and shot 1/2″ group. I have taken two coyotes and two deer with the XP. Exit wounds on coyotes were baseball size. On the deer the entrance hole was small, but the rib cage under the hide was a 3 inch mass of destruction. Rib cage on exit was same as entrance. You don’t have to worry about tracking if your shot is well placed. Fantastic ammunition for hunting.

Short and sweet…..groups at 1/2″ at 100 yards with a Remington BDL. Recoil is more than some, but not bad at all. The Super X bullet is fantastic. Kills deer as dead as they can be, without spending much money…..keeper in my book.

Test fired this ammo before deer season and shot a clean hole right threw a ar- 500 brinnel round target. was highly impressed.

Killed my first big buck with this ammo this year up at my Uncle’s place in SE Missouri. A beautiful 6 pointer. About 130 yards. First shot was a miss. Reloaded, aimed again a little lower. Squeezed the shot off. The buck dropped like a rock where he stood. Later while we were skinning him found the bullet had hit him a little high, top half of a lung, then broke his spine/backbone. Good ammo. Will use again.

Wow! This is great bullet and it is very accurate in my Savage .270. I shot a doe at 300 yards and she dropped. I’ve shot 8 deer with this bullet, and I haven’t tracked any because the bullet does its job well. The price of the bullets is great too. You can’t beat this ammunition
